Ordinary Magic by Caitlen Rubino-Bradway
Release Date: May 8th, 2012 by Bloomsbury
Details: 288 pages, hardcover
Genre: Middle Grade > Fantasy > Magic
Source: NetGalley (Thank you NetGalley & Bloomsbury!)
Summary (Goodreads):

In Abby’s world, magic isn’t anything special: it’s a part of everyday life. So when Abby learns that she has zero magical abilities, she’s branded an “Ord”—ordinary, bad luck, and quite possibly a danger to society.

The outlook for kids like Abby isn’t bright. Many are cast out by their families, while others are sold to treasure hunters (ordinary kids are impervious to spells and enchantments). Luckily for Abby, her family enrolls her in a school that teaches ordinary kids how to get around in a magical world. But with treasure-hunting kidnappers and carnivorous goblins lurking around every corner, Abby’s biggest problem may not be learning how to be ordinary—it’s whether or not she’s going to survive the school year!

Ordinary Magic is about Abby. Her world is pretty much opposite of ours; people who can cast magic are normal, those who can't, aren't. Abby comes from a family where her siblings are very high on the magic scale (especially her sister who I believe is a 9) and they're a very nice loving group of people. So when Abby comes back and they realize she's an Ord, they give her nothing but full support. I suppose it helps that her high ranking sister also works for King. So she puts Abby in a school for Ord's where they teach them how to live without magic (sounds awful, right? lol).

It was interesting how the author spun the fact that living with magic was normal where doing normal things like hand washing dishes (instead of poof'ing them away -- where do they go anyway?), cleaning areas, learning self defense and studying were such a hassle! While Abby doesn't leave the school much, I thought the world building was fantastic. Every time they would travel from home back to the school (on a magic carpet!) I could clearly see what they saw. I loved how close Abby and her family were and how much they cared about Abby even though she was an Ord. I loved the tone of the book, how it felt like Abby was sitting with you, telling you this story (complete with her side comments). It helped me feel a connection with her.

I enjoyed the parts having to do with Barbarian Mike and his wench Trixie. They were so frustrating and they just did not know when to quit! Seriously! Even though they annoyed me to no end, I still enjoyed their appearances. Mostly because I was more interested in how Abby would react. But geez, talk about desperate!

I also really liked Fran, and how her writing was always in a tiny font to emphasis she was was a tiny person. And Peter! Even though he was a jerk most of the time. When he wasn't he could be really sweet, especially to Abby. I also liked the teachers after getting to know them, they weren't so bad.

While I did enjoy this read (for the most part) and the adventure, there was something missing. It didn't completely pull me in. I can't really figure out why :(

"Gil slept through his," I said.
"Gil is a very special boy," Mom said. "And possibly narcoleptic."

Minotaurs are a strange race. They're magical beings - they can interact with, or manipulate, or use magic, what ever the right word is. But they choose not to lots of times, and that freaks out some folks. I guess they think it's simpler to just punch someone in the face, the old fashioned way.

"But Peter's not suffering, he's just being mean."
Olivia pinched my cheek. "you are so totally cute, I can't even deal."

Dark Kiss by Michelle Rowen
Nightwatchers #1
Release Date: May 29th, 2012 by Harlequin Teen
Details: 348 pages, paperback
Genre: Young Adult > Paranormal > Angels
Source: NetGalley (Thank you NetGalley & Harlequin Teen!)
Summary (Goodreads):

I don't do dangerous.  Smart, über-careful, ordinary Samantha-that's me. But I just couldn't pass up a surprise kiss from my number-one unattainable crush. A kiss that did something to me...something strange. Now I feel hungry all the time, but not for food. It's like part of me is missing-and I don't know if I can get it back.

Then there's Bishop. At first I thought he was just a street kid, but the secrets he's keeping are as intense as his unearthly blue eyes. If he's what I think he is, he may be the only one who can help me. But something terrifying is closing in, and the one chance Bishop and I have to stop it means losing everything I ever wanted and embracing the darkness inside me....

I'll admit, I wasn't digging Dark Kiss for the first 36% of the book. I couldn't connect to the story or any of the characters. I pretty much sped read through it since I found it hard to immerse myself.

I didn't realize this when I first started reading Dark Kiss but it's a story about angels & demons. But a little bit different. Something, someone else is posing a threat to both heaven and hell and now both angels and demons are being teamed up together to stop whoever is behind it. Two demons, two angels and a girl who's "special" caught in the middle. Oh yeah, this is gonna go down well....

Dark Kiss was pretty fast paced. With Samantha spotting all these freaky spot lights every so often and the drama between Samantha and her friends in reality, there was always something going on. I really liked the idea and mythology behind the authors angels (and demons). The idea of the blade and I even sort of liked the ritual. The contrast between Samantha and her best friend after the change really showed the difference between Samantha and every other Gray. I wish we had gotten to know more about Samantha's background since we're only introduced to it near the end of the book. I personally think Kraven wants Samantha to know more about him and his previous life. *shrug*. Also, I thought it was sort of weird that this thing all went down with kissing as the key element. I mean, I guess if you were to suck a soul out the only way it could logically leave is through the mouth.

I found it hard to relate or to even like Samantha. She over reacted an awful lot through out the book which was really frustrating. If she had just sat down, chilled and listened for a minute instead of running around like some sort of lunatic maybe things would had made a little bit more sense to her. I get that her new change is a little bit... freaky but it is what it is! Chill woman!

While Bishop seemed sweet enough and he was definitely mysterious. Someone I'd love to know the background to, he didn't really feel... real to me. I get that his head is messed up from the fall and he was all jumbled up but I wish he had more of a personality. It also really annoyed me that he felt the need to say Samantha's name every three seconds.

I loved Kraven! He was such a snarky jackass! I loved the times when he seemed like he seemed to really care about Samantha's well being. I totally think he's capable of being a really sweet person. If he really cared enough lol. I also really liked Conner and Zach. Roth was just a straight up jerk who didn't listen to anyone or cared about anyone. I'm glad he was hardly present! Also Natalie? What a twisted b!tch! I couldn't stand her, I can't believe Sam even gave her the time of day! Ridic! I had a hunch at who the riddle man was but I guess in the end I was wrong. Now I'm so much more curious to know who he is!

While I couldn't connect myself with the characters or immerse myself completely in the story, I did enjoy this read. The mission, the mythology, the suspense, the unexpected twists and turns made for a really enjoyable read. I can't wait to get my hands on book #2!!

Naked by Megan Hart
Release Date: August 1, 2010
Details: ebook
Source: NetGalley
Series: No
Rating: 4 out of 5
Summary (goodreads):

I can't give my heart to a man who's so...

unconventional.

His last sexual relationship was with a married couple. It's enough that my ex-fiancé preferred men, I can't take that chance again no matter how much my body thrives on Alex's touch. I can't risk it, but I can't resist it, either.

Alex can be very convincing when he wants something.

And he wants me.

REVIEW:
Naked is a novel I've been itching for since I saw it on NetGalley, and after awhile, I finally got it. Whoohoo!

I didn't know what to expect when I first started reading it... but I wasn't expecting it to open with her at a party at her gay friend's house. It got a little confusing in the beginning, trying to remember who was who and who was with who and who Alex was. I did love the concern and friendship she shared with Patrick in the beginning and I absolutely loved Teddy. But towards the end, I couldn't stand Patrick. I couldn't stand scenes with him in it because I knew it would lead to irritation.

Patrick reminded me exactly of my own gay friend who was conniving and jealous every time I had a new boyfriend. I couldn't help but feel for Olivia every time he said something totally uncalled for. And I was proud of her for the way she handled the situations with Patrick. She deserved better than his friendship and she deserved so much better than what he put her through in the past.

I loved Alex's character. He was mysterious, sexy and damaged. I have a thing for mysterious damaged guys. I hear he's in another Megan Hart novel, I haven't read that one but they go over it briefly in Naked and since I hadn't read that novel, that whole scene came as a huge surprise to me. I'm actually glad I didn't read it first!

All in all, this is a great novel, even if you took out the steamy scenes. And I think that's what makes a great erotica, when you can look beyond the steamy scenes and still appreciate the story behind it. There was a lot of intensity in this book as far as Olivia finally getting things and Alex facing his demons. I only wish we knew more of where this journey will take both Olivia and Alex.

*Thank you to NetGalley for giving me an opportunity to read this novel!
